What type of activities should I engage in?
- While resting
If you have acute CHF, sit up in bed which allows your lungs
to function better. Dangling your legs over the edge of the
bed will help drain fluid from your chest. If you are on bed
rest, alternately flex and extend your toes several times an
hour and perform range-of-motion leg exercises as scheduled.
These exercises can help prevent blood clots caused by congestion
of fluid in the veins of your legs.
- Exercising
Regular exercise such as walking or cycling should be done if
you have stable heart failure. Even short periods of bed rest
result in reduced exercise tolerance, muscular atrophy, and
weakness, thus modify your exercise routine and pace yourself.
To help avoid excessive fatigue, alternate light and heavy tasks
and rest frequently. Maintain your activity level provided it
doesn't cause shortness of breath, rapid heart, or severe
fatigue. If these symptoms appear or worsen, notify your doctor.
Gradually increase your activity. Recent studies show that patients
with heart failure can exercise safely, and regular exercise
may improve functional status and decrease symptoms. Stay as
active as possible.
