It is very important that you stop smoking. Studies show that smoking can increase your heart rate, narrow your blood vessels, raise blood pressure, cause spasms of the coronary arteries and scar the lungs. It may be hard not to smoke again, but you CAN do it. Smoking is the WORST thing you can do to your heart.

Here are some tips to help you not to smoke:

  • Ask family and friends not to smoke around you.
  • Each day say, “I will not smoke today.” Don’t set yourself up to fail by saying, “I’ll never smoke again.” And don’t think, “One little smoke won’t matter.” It will.
  • Do things with your hands, like puzzles or needlework.
  • Change the habits that make you want to smoke (lingering at the table after dinner, etc.)
  • Avoid high calorie snacks (nibble on carrots, celery, fruit).
  • Keep a clean taste in your mouth (brush teeth, use mouthwash).
  • Avoid coffee, alcohol or other drinks that make you want to smoke.
  • When you are tempted to smoke, chew sugarless gum or play with a paper clip or marble. If your hands and mouth are busy, you will be less likely to light up.
  • If you can’t quit alone, call your hospital, clinic, heart or lung association. Ask if there is a stop-smoking program or other support group to help you quit.

Often it takes more than one effort to stop smoking. Keep trying until you win the battle.
